Autistic Burnout Recovery
Understanding Burnout vs. Depression
Autistic burnout is a state of physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion that results from prolonged masking, sensory overload, and the chronic effort of navigating a neurotypical world. While it can look similar to depression on the surface — low energy, withdrawal, difficulty functioning — autistic burnout has distinct roots and requires a different approach. Together, we will work to understand what burnout looks like for you specifically, what has been driving it, and how to distinguish it from other conditions you may be managing.
The Path to Recovery
Recovery from autistic burnout is not about pushing through or finding ways to perform better in the same circumstances. It is about reducing the demands on your system, reclaiming energy, and rebuilding at a pace that honors your needs. Therapy provides a space to identify what has been depleting you, process the impact of long-term masking or overextension, and develop a recovery plan grounded in your values and neurotype.
Building Sustainable Strategies
Once you have stabilized, we can work together to build a clearer picture of your personal warning signs and the conditions that lead to burnout. From there, we develop individualized strategies for protecting your energy — whether that means setting limits on masking, redesigning routines, communicating needs more effectively, or identifying environments and relationships that restore rather than drain you. The goal is not to eliminate challenge, but to create a life that is genuinely sustainable for your brain.
Life Transition Preparation
Major life transitions are stressful for anyone — but for neurodivergent adults, they can be especially overwhelming. Changes in routine, environment, relationships, and expectations can strain energy reserves and challenge well-established coping strategies. Therapy can be a valuable source of support during these pivotal moments.
This includes transitions such as graduating from college or graduate school and entering the workforce, becoming a parent, relocating to a new city or community, navigating changes in relationships, or any other significant shift in daily life and identity. Together, we can work to prepare for what's ahead, process what's changing, and build the flexibility and resilience to move through it.
